Motion Title: Open Source support
Proposer: Raphael Darley
Seconder: Oliver Geer
Description:
CompSoc has had a growing amount of funding in recent years, which has
allowed us to put on more, and larger events, for a growing membership.
But we are aware that the society, as an organisation, and its members
individually, rely on a great deal of open source software, and
projects. I therefore believe that if the society has funds leftover
from its regular operations should contribute to the support of these
projects. For example, the society uses mailman for its mailing lists,
many members use thunderbird, and the internet archive. I therefore
propose a bylaw be added with the following effect:
At the end of the academic year, the Treasurer should consult the
committee and membership and affect donations to open source or other
projects which are used by the society itself, or by the membership. The
amounts of such donations are left to the committee’s discretion and
care should be taken that the society has sufficient funds for Freshers
fair and the beginning of Michaelmas. The amount of support should be determined in consideration of the use of the project, and the impact of our funding.
This motion was considered at the Michaelmas Term 2025 General Meeting, please see the meetings for details.
Concerns were raised as to the wording "open source or other projects" in the motion, it was decided by the proposer to substitute this for "open source software projects and related services/communities".
The motion passed 15-0
The text is therefore added to the bylaws as revised
